Enumeration day for the third federal census was August 6, 1810 and ten months was allowed for its completion. The break down of age categories is the same as the 1800 census. There are no column totals for the town of Branford though there are for other towns. This writer has added the page and line numbers for easier reference, they are not on the original census.
The names on the Branford census are fairly easy to read and the columns clearly marked. Spelling is more consistent than in previous censuses and more closely resembles what is used today. Only a few first names are abbreviated, for example Benj. for Benjamin, however the abbreviations are not used all the time. When there are two men with the same name, the second in the census is given the suffix "2d". This does not necessarily mean it is the man in town known as the 2nd but is the second person with that name the enumerator came to.
This document is this writer's interpretation of the genealogy of the people in the 1810 census. It is noted when relatives lived next to or near each other. In the 1810 census there is development of neighborhoods and the building of more residences. It should also be noted that a man that appears in the 1800 census but not in the 1810 may be living in a child's household.
The route the enumerator took in the 1810 census is not clear and it appears haphazard. An educated guess of the enumerator’s route is as follows:
Day 1- Started at East Main Street and Windmill Hill (page 400), along East Main Street up to Mill Plain (pages 401) and a few residents of Damascus (page 402).
Day 2- Some of North Branford (pages 403 & 404) and southern Northford (pages 405 & 406).
Day 3- Branford center (page 407), along Montowese Street (page 408), to Stony Creek and back to Paved Street (page 409)
Day 4- To North Branford center and east district (pages 410-413) and some stragglers in Stony Creek, Damascus and North Branford (pages 414 & 415).
Day 5- Branford center, by the current library and Bradley Street area (pages 416-418). South to Double Beach and Branford Point (page 419), unto Branford Hills (page 420).
Day 6- Northford (pages 420-422) moving unto Wallingford.
